Tesco<\/a> has made a major change to its supermarket aisles<\/a> \u2013 and despite being designed to thwart shoplifters<\/a>, it’s left some customers feeling put out.<\/p>\n

In a select number of stores and across certain high-value products like spirits, the retailer has introduced locked security cabinets<\/a>, which have the ability to track when items have been removed, and how long for.<\/p>\n

The technology necessitates a lengthy four-step process in order to open them<\/a>, as well as the ability to ring staff in case any suspicious activity is detected.<\/p>\n

First of all, shoppers are presented with a message explaining ‘this cabinet is locked for security reasons.’ The machine, which operates using AI, then prompts users to tap an arrow to be granted access.<\/p>\n

After pressing the button, the system confirms that it’s ‘processing the request’ before starting a short countdown. And after all that, the goods are finally released, getting customers closer to a well-deserved tipple. Gin and tonic, anyone?<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s only been rolled out in a few Tesco locations – including Purley in South London<\/a> – the move quickly caught the attention of shoppers. And not everyone\u2019s happy.<\/p>\n

Posting in the r\/Tesco Subreddit<\/a>, @The_King_Bowser snapped a picture of the shelves in their local store, asking if anyone else had noticed the measure.<\/p>\n

In the replies, @Fatandugly35 questioned \u2018how does this actually stop [thieves]?\u2019, while @mamoneis added: \u2018What baffles is the amount of paraphernalia in place instead of keeping one dude in that aisle.’<\/p>\n

A third commenter, @SebastianHaff17, even described the new system as akin to \u2018paying for an immersive prison experience.\u2019<\/p>\n

The state of the country.’<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have introduced sliding security devices on a limited number of shelves as an additional security measure to help reduce theft,’ a spokesperson from Tesco told <strong>Metro<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>According to the supermarket, the devices have only been rolled out at a ‘small number of stores’, and are ‘not a universal policy’. <\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/25\/tesco-introduces-big-brother-style-self-service-checkouts-stores-23238362\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">change Tesco has made<\/a> of late though. Please check you scanned it correctly before continuing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In Gateshead, <a href=\"http:\/\/-https\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/26\/tesco-scrap-clubcard-checkout-feature-shoppers-use-every-day-22627146\/%5D\">the retailer<\/a> is trialling another new feature at its Scan as you Shop checkouts, installing trolley and basket scales inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/07\/shoppers-claim-tesco-gone-far-new-dystopian-checkout-feature-22691258\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tesco Extra<\/a> store.<\/p>\n<p>Those who use the service simply pick up a handset upon entering and scan the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/03\/major-change-supermarket-checkouts-50-year-shopping-feature-axed-22285797\/\">barcode<\/a> of each item as they put it in their basket or trolley.
