The evening of September 9 had started like any other.<\/p>\n

My husband, Paul, had just come home from his volunteer<\/a> work at the local prison; he\u2019d said hi to our two kids before joining me in the kitchen, where I was making a cup of tea with my back to him.<\/p>\n

His voice sounded just the same as always after a long day, but when I turned around and saw his face, I realised something was seriously wrong. His right side had drooped<\/a>, and although he was only 45, I knew instantly he was having a stroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since that night, our lives have never been the same.<\/p>\n

Not only was Paul\u2019s health affected, but we also found ourselves in nearly \u00a360,000 worth of debt with seemingly no way out.<\/p>\n

In hindsight, our problems began when our joinery business began to struggle after the war in Ukraine<\/a> sent timber prices soaring. <\/p>\n

Knowing we couldn\u2019t pass those costs on to our customers, our profit margins soon vanished, along with our once-reliable contracts and the local contractors we had hired. As things continued to tighten, Paul began taking on all the work himself. <\/p>\n

Before long, he was working six, sometimes seven days a week<\/a>, often up to 18 hours a day. We knew this wasn\u2019t sustainable, but it was all we could do to keep afloat. <\/p>\n

By the end of August, Paul couldn\u2019t cope any more. He went to the doctor and was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/12\/28\/seven-men-open-up-about-what-its-like-to-have-depression-7188165\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/12\/28\/seven-men-open-up-about-what-its-like-to-have-depression-7188165\/\">diagnosed with depression<\/a> and anxiety. <\/p>\n<p>And just one week later, in early September, he had his stroke. <\/p>\n<p>At that point, we cut back on everything we possibly could: subscriptions, mobile contracts, and handed back our financed cars. When we cancelled <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>, that\u2019s when the kids knew things were really serious.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/alaskanativeowned.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_251398793-0c4f.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23093440\" alt=\"Sam Helsby: I had a stroke, then we got into almost ?60,000 of debt\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Naturally, our instinct was to fix it, to figure it out, so, once again, we began cutting costs (Picture: Sam Helsby)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the stroke, Paul had to stop work and, when we submitted the final accounts for the business, we realised just how bad things had got \u2013 we were \u00a360,000 in debt.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, our instinct was to fix it, to figure it out, so, once again, we began <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/cost-of-living\/\">cutting costs. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>We sold everything we could, including our TVs and electrical items, and reduced our lives down to the basics. <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/09\/28\/how-to-stay-warm-when-youre-working-from-home-without-putting-the-heating-on-24-7-13338786\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/09\/28\/how-to-stay-warm-when-youre-working-from-home-without-putting-the-heating-on-24-7-13338786\/\">Instead of putting the heating on<\/a>, we wore oversized hoodies around the house. <\/p>\n<p>We swapped our weekly shop <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/20\/another-win-metros-formula-change-campaign-government-confirms-food-banks-can-supply-formula-struggling-families-22383135\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/20\/another-win-metros-formula-change-campaign-government-confirms-food-banks-can-supply-formula-struggling-families-22383135\/\">for food banks<\/a>, waste-saving apps, and a local community supermarket. We\u2019d hoped that he\u2019d recover and return to work so we could catch up \u2013 of course, what we hadn\u2019t realised is that we could have got <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/universal-credit\/\">Universal Credit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we were so busy just trying to survive, though, we never thought to take five minutes to check our entitlements with an <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/04\/11\/what-benefits-can-i-claim-if-i-receive-the-state-pension-18586675\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/04\/11\/what-benefits-can-i-claim-if-i-receive-the-state-pension-18586675\/\">online benefits calculator<\/a>. Instead, we just kept cutting back.<\/p>\n<p>But as we learned, there’s only so far that you can reduce costs until you can’t reduce them anymore. And no matter how much we cut back, the bills didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n<p>Within six weeks, despite all our efforts, it was clear there was no way of catching back up. As a result, we kept the doors locked and the blinds down, hiding away from them and the rest of the world out of fear and shame.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know what we would have done had someone at the food bank not mentioned Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to us just before Christmas. Have your say in the comments below<\/span><\/span><a class=\"metro-comment-cta__button\" href=\"#metro-comments-container\">Comment Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>I rang them right away to ask for help with our debts, and on January 15, a man called Jonathan came to see us.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, we had just \u00a32 left on the meter and were about to have our <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/05\/30\/millions-of-homes-could-face-power-cuts-and-rationed-electricity-16733697\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/05\/30\/millions-of-homes-could-face-power-cuts-and-rationed-electricity-16733697\/\">electricity and gas cut off<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Jonathan sent us a text with an emergency voucher for gas and electricity, which allowed us to put \u00a320 on the meter, which got us through the rest of January. The DRO paused my debt repayments and interest for a year. If my situation hadn\u2019t improved within that year, the debts would have been wiped clean. It also meant that bailiffs stopped hounding us.<\/p>\n<p>The personal way that CAP dealt with us as people, as a family, was so unique. The help they gave us, not just practically helping us get out of debt but also in terms of friendship and support, made such a huge difference in a dark time.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve still got a long way to go, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Although Paul is still on medication, he\u2019s recovering well and has applied to attend college to retrain as a health and safety inspector, as he can no longer manage being on the tools. <\/p>\n<p>We are on Universal Credit, but the money is still very tight. To manage, we have to stick to a very strict budget, including using apps that help cut costs and reduce food waste, and we don\u2019t put the heating on if we can help it.<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, this experience taught us just how vulnerable anyone can become.
