Confused at first as to where it came from, these concerns soon transitioned into &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/21\/everything-can-afford-different-levels-wealth-private-jets-housekeepers-23097655\/\">I&#8217;m rich,&#8217;<\/a> when I realised my bank had &#8216;gifted&#8217; me a lovely overdraft to spend at my leisure.<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, was followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/19\/shoppers-using-klarna-now-face-stricter-credit-checks-23113635\/\">shopping spree<\/a> at Beyond Retro, lunch in the <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/brighton-hove-albion-fc\/\">Brighton<\/a> Laines, and an afternoon sesh at <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/10\/uks-walkable-city-a-vibrant-coastal-spot-just-hour-london-23052405\/\">East Street Tap<\/a>. Looking back, I can see how silly my spending habits were and how dangerous they could become. <\/p>\n<p>But with 2K casually landing in a few of my friends&#8217; accounts &#8211; during the height of summer &#8211; it was safety in numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, I managed to pay my overdraft off before the charges kicked in, which saved me a whole lot of future <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/15\/coming-cost-27-000-no-regrets-23074674\/\">debt<\/a>. It also forced me to become more <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/22\/first-time-buyers-can-save-50-000-deposits-lifetime-isas-23220691\/\">responsible with money<\/a>, focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/22\/average-amount-brits-savings-according-age-23216815\/\">saving it, rather than spending.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the whole scenario got me thinking: what should your overdraft limit be, according to your age? Because at 18, a random and unasked-for \u00a32000 doesn&#8217;t seem like the brightest idea. one-size-fits-all answer to how much your overdraft limit should be, but we do see some patterns <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/10\/average-salary-uk-based-age-get-2-20616977\/\">based on age<\/a> and life stage,&#8217; explains Sheeran.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers agrees, adding: &#8216;A more practical approach is to set your overdraft limit according to your income, which usually grows as you get older.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But for clarity, the pair have split these guidelines into <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/10\/26\/average-uk-annual-salary-age-revealed-see-compare-2-21870825\/\">age groups<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/23379517\" data-secret=\"rTVf4X2UQE\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aged 18-24: Max \u00a3500<\/h2>\n<p>&#8216;If you\u2019re 18 to 24, your overdraft limit will typically be somewhere between \u00a3100 and \u00a3500,&#8217; says Sheeran. At this stage, most people are <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/05\/15\/martin-lewis-issues-urgent-three-day-warning-students-applying-loans-20841923\/\">studying<\/a> or just starting out in work, so they don\u2019t need or qualify for a large buffer.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unsure of what bank account to go for as a student or young adult, Rogers says that many <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/09\/uni-graduates-told-check-now-a-share-184-000-000-21961809\/\">student accounts<\/a> offer interest-free overdrafts of around \u00a3500.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;These can be useful if managed carefully, but it\u2019s important to treat it as a buffer, not free money,&#8217; she warns. If only I&#8217;d had such advice back in the day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aged 25-34: Max \u00a31,000<\/h2>\n<p>According to Sheeran, this is when we expect to see limits rise to around \u00a3500 to \u00a31,000. &#8216;As people&#8217;s income increases, they start taking on more financial responsibilities like rent or bills,&#8217; he states.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers elaborates: &#8216;Early in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/18\/5-simple-questions-employers-arent-allowed-ask-a-job-interview-22745460\/\">your career<\/a>, between the ages of 25 and 30, when your income is more stable, banks may offer larger overdrafts.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>However, the expert still urges you to be sensible. But ideally, it\u2019s used only for <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/05\/31\/hidden-house-buying-fees-end-costing-6-000-20949066\/\">unexpected costs<\/a>, not everyday spending. <\/p>\n<p>The amount is likely increased to this level due to higher earnings and the expectation that people this age are more financially mature. Meaning, they typically refrain from splurging on superficial purchases.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re older &#8211; around the 30+ age &#8211; and more established, you\u2019ll have access to higher limits, explains Rogers.
